The objective of this treatment is to assist individuals to resolve crises and improve overall quality of life by learning to regulate emotions and behavioral reactions, learn self acceptance, and learn how to positively influence their environment.  Northland Counseling Center has undergone intensive training and is certified by the state of Minnesota to provide DBT.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is based on a treatment model developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. The objective of this approach is to help the client resolve crises by learning to regulate emotions and reactions, learn self acceptance, and learn how to positively influence their environment. The methods utilized in DBT include Individual Therapy, Telephone consultation, Skills Training Group,   and Consultation Group.

Clients Served

DBT is available to adults who are struggling with behaviorally and emotionally challenged lifestyles that result in engaging in actions/behaviors that are damaging to an individual and their environment. Individuals often come from backgrounds where their lives have been very invalidating and traumatic. Diagnostic categories appropriate for referral include, but are not limited to Emotion Regulation Disorders. (i.e. Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Disassociative Disorder, Anxiety, and Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.)

Individual Therapy

The DBT program recommends weekly and ongoing therapy sessions. Individual Therapy is offered to support the acquisition and utilization of skills in one’s daily life. Telephone consultation to individuals is also recommended and encouraged. This is designed to coach in skill usage.

Skills Training Group


The focus in DBT skills training group are the following four modules:

  1. Core Mindfulness
  2. Interpersonal Effectiveness
  3. Emotional Regulation
  4. Distress Tolerance

This group meets one time per week for 2 1/2 hours. Recommended participation is generally one-year. Participants will learn the skills and how to apply them through role play, active discussion, worksheet assignments, and practicing skills in session.

The focus targets in the Skills Group are:

  1. Decrease therapy interfering behaviors
  2. Strengthen interpersonal skills and
  3. Increase behavior instrumental to a positive quality of life; decreasing behaviors interfering with a positive quality of life such as emotional reactivity, self invalidation, crisis-generating behaviors, grief inhibition, active-passivity behaviors and mood dependent behavior.

Consultation Team

DBT Consultation Team includes Therapists and Skills Group Facilitators who meet on a weekly basis. The purpose of these meetings is for team members to discuss DBT Theory and Skills in regards to successfully treating clients, discussing barriers that may arise by the client and/or therapist, coordination of treatment services and support for each team member.

Program Costs

NCC is a provider for most insurance programs including Medical Assistance. Individuals without insurance coverage may qualify for a sliding fee based on income.

Applied DBT

Applied DBT is a group available to individuals who have graduated from a DBT program. This group is offered weekly and promotes application of skills learned. Our focus is to continue improving quality of life and to enhance and reinforce application of the skills.
