What is a Mental Health Crisis
A mental health crisis can be defined in different ways including, but not limited to; an increase in current mental health symptoms that are different from an individual’s baseline of symptoms. At times when symptoms increase, individuals are at risk for relapsing, and self-harm or harm to others. A crisis may be prompted from an increase in life stressors, recent life changes, loss, and medication changes to name a few.
How can services be provided
Services offered can be provided in the following ways:
- Face-to-face
- Telehealth
Northland utilizes ZOOM for telehealth services. The individual receiving telehealth services must be safe enough to do so.
Mental Health Crisis Assessment, Intervention, and Stabilization Services
Mobile Mental Health Crisis Services are voluntary, immediate, short-term intensive mental health assessments and intervention services provided during a mental health crisis. The goal is to help the individual begin to return to their baseline level of functioning by helping them cope with immediate stressors, identify available resources, develop plans, and avoid unnecessary hospitalization and/or loss of independent living.

Crisis Assessments
A crisis assessment is an immediate, evaluation to assess the individual’s situation and identify any immediate need for emergency services.

Crisis Intervention
Crisis interventions are short-term, intensive mental health services started during a mental health assessment. Interventions can assist with coping with immediate stressors, identifying available resources, developing intervention treatment plans, and avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations.

Crisis Stabilization
Crisis stabilization services are mental health services provided to an individual after a crisis intervention to help them obtain their functional level as it was before the crisis. Stabilization services are based on the crisis assessment and crisis intervention plan, and may include supportive counseling, skills training, education, referrals, and collaboration with other service providers.
